Can Microblading Help Alopecia-Related Hair Loss?
What is Alopecia?
Alopecia is the term used for all hair loss, this can be caused by everything from genetics, i.e. a receding hairline or thinning hair to chemotherapy-related hair loss. When there is no obvious cause alopecia is caused by an autoimmune response, in which the body mistakenly attacks the hair follicles and causes the hair to fall out. Alopecia can result in mild to complete hair loss. There are many forms of alopecia but regardless of the form, it can be quite an adjustment getting used to seeing yourself with less, or no, hair! Aside from the scalp, one of the very first places that a person may lose hair from, is the eyebrows and eyelashes! There are lots of options out there to replace the lost hair from hair transplantation to eyebrow extensions and wigs and then, there are those who apply makeup daily. Whether it’s powder, pomade or pencil this can get quite exhausting, causing many to seek out a more permanent solution! Not to mention, as a humble layperson and not a brow expert, this can be quite time-consuming and the results somewhat lackluster. How often do we get them almost even but they are never quite even, oh the struggle! Not to mention, makeup products, even the “waterproof ones” tend to run with sweat or when swimming and drippy eyebrows don’t look good on anyone! If you’re fed up with your brows keeping you from just living your life than microblading or shading may be right for you. Many may be hesitant about the prospect of microblading or micro shading, calling to mind images of old tattooed brows that turn blue-green over time and are solid and blocky in shape and appearance, and of course being permanent, for better or for worse. This can be an intimidating thought but microblading and micro shading are very different from these tattoo techniques of yesteryear. Microblading and micro shading are new and innovative treatments for hair loss in the brow area even for those with complete and total hair loss in the brow area! These treatments can be done in a matter of hours with minimal to no downtime. In fact, you can return to work and social activities the following day and is a fraction of the cost of a hair transplant while still maintaining an ultra-natural look.
Is microblading a good solution for your alopecia?
Why can’t I just use makeup, though? Using makeup is usually one of the first things we try out however it’s not always the right choice for everyone. It may not be right for you if you work long shifts or live a very active lifestyle, for instance, a personal trainer may sweat too much to only apply the brow makeup in the morning, multiple successive touch ups will most likely be needed. This can be quite laborious and frustrating. Additionally, those who have sensitive skin irritated by makeup would not want to use this method day in and day out. This is, however, the cheapest option, it is also the most temporary, being able to be washed away at any time, should you change your mind about the shape or color, this makes it low risk.
Tattooing vs. Microblading…
Tattooing can look slightly less natural and will be permanent, additionally, microblading ink is meant to be placed in the superficial layers of the skin and can look more crisp and precise and is less likely to get fuzzy over time, also it will not change funny colors like blue or green as it ages. Then there is also the fact that it’s permanent, which can be kind of a scary commitment for many people. Microblading achieves a beautiful natural result! If microblading is done correctly then it will be virtually indistinguishable from natural brow hair. Many people also love that it is only semi-permanent. Microshading is even more saturated in color and richness and gives a more dramatic “make up look” this is great if you want more than just a hair replacement tool but to also not have to apply makeup and wear dramatic or glamour eyebrow makeup on a daily basis. If you’re somewhere in-between no makeup and glamour makeup than a combination of the two techniques may be right for you. Giving you the natural look of hair strokes with a subtle hint of color in between the strokes, this also helps to blend and soften the microblading strokes on completely bare or particularly sparse brows. When done by a qualified artist or technician the process can be almost completely painless. The pain is very manageable, being akin to a small rubber band snap and with proper anesthetic use, you will be nice and numb for the whole procedure! Microblading and micro shading can be a great solution for almost anyone suffering from hair loss but there are a few things that may make you ineligible as a candidate and that is:
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant
- Extreme and excessive sebum production from the skin (oily skin)
- You have overly sensitive skin (numbing agents can be used to help decrease sensitivity, however, some cases of extreme sensitivity may prohibit treatment)
- You have severe acne
- You have a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
- You have any allergies to topical anesthetics or to tattoo ink
- You have a rash in the area like eczema or psoriasis (procedure can be done once this has cleared)
- a previous tattoo in the area that has not faded (send photos to find out if your tattoo has faded adequately for this procedure to be completed, 214-432-2077)
If you are unsure if you are a candidate for microblading or micro shading, schedule a consultation with an artist at a reputable studio, talk to your dermatologist or plastic surgeon or your general practitioner for more information, they can help you determine if you are an ideal candidate or not. Recovery is minimal and you can return to work and social activities immediately. Side effects are minimal, common side effects include redness, itchiness, and tenderness in the treatment area. This should dissipate quickly. Compared to the recovery and downtime with a hair transplant, it is much less invasive. Your artist will recommend an “aftercare program” to care for your newly bladed or shaded brows to keep them vibrant and prevent infection. This may include using a special brow cleanser and post-treatment balms or ointments. It is important to follow all aftercare recommendations to avoid infection and receive the best results out of your healed treatment. When choosing an artist or brow studio, it is important to make sure that they are experienced and have some type of formal training. It’s also important to note that microblading is an incredibly personal art form and all microblading artists have slightly different hands and produce different styles and aesthetics, some may focus on subtle natural brows while another specializes glamour brows which tend to be more dramatic in shape and in color, it is best to look at many artists before and afters and choose the one whose style best fits your desired outcome.
